🇹🇿 Samia Suluhu Hassan Wins Tanzania Election by Landslide Amid Deadly Protests

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been re-elected with nearly 98% of the vote, in an election overshadowed by violent protests, opposition bans, and international outrage.

The electoral commission announced that Hassan received over 31.9 million votes, with turnout at 87%. However, opposition parties rejected the result, describing it as a “coronation” after two major challengers were disqualified.

Protests erupted across major cities, with CHADEMA claiming hundreds were killed. The UN Human Rights Office confirmed at least 10 deaths, urging an independent probe. The government dismissed the figures as exaggerated.

Authorities have imposed curfews and restricted internet access, while Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo denied allegations of excessive force.

Hassan, 65, who took office in 2021 after John Magufuli’s death, was once praised for easing repression but now faces growing criticism over human rights abuses and shrinking democratic space.
