A political pressure group, the Ambode Comeback Crusaders, has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reinstate former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.
In an open letter dated September 28, the group appealed to the APC National Chairman and Lagos State Chairman to “reflect on the wider benefits” of giving Ambode a second term.
Signed by its convener, Abiodun Fashola, the letter praised Ambode’s 2015–2019 tenure, describing it as marked by “exemplary leadership” in infrastructure, public transport, and healthcare.
The group also lauded Ambode’s financial management skills, crediting him with strengthening Lagos’s reputation as Nigeria’s economic hub.
“His track record and vision align seamlessly with the APC’s ideals of progress and development,” the letter said, adding that his inclusive style made him “a leader who listens to both stakeholders and ordinary citizens.”
The Ambode Comeback Crusaders argued that his return would “usher Lagos into a new era of prosperity and innovation” while enhancing APC’s standing as a party of growth and transformation.
Copies of the appeal were also sent to President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and other political stakeholders.
Ambode, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, succeeded Babatunde Fashola as Lagos governor in 2015 but was denied a second term after losing the APC primary to Sanwo-Olu in 2019.
