2027 Election: PDP Faction Rejects Tinubu Endorsement, Calls Move ‘Immoral and Unjust’

A faction of Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected any plan to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such a move as “immoral” and damaging to the party’s credibility.

The position was made public by Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday.

Ememobong insisted that endorsing the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress would undermine the PDP’s role as a credible opposition force.

“It is improper, it is immoral, it is unjust, it is unfair for an opposition party of the standing of the Peoples Democratic Party to endorse the presidency or the presidential candidature of President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

Internal Crisis and Reconciliation Efforts

The comments come amid ongoing reconciliation efforts within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions following recent electoral setbacks.

Ememobong expressed cautious optimism that the reconciliation process would prioritise the party’s long-term strength over short-term political calculations.

He stressed that the Turaki-led faction would push for a united PDP that remains independent and committed to holding the government accountable.

“We are hoping that reason will prevail over emotions,” he added.

Opposition Role at Stake

The debate over a possible endorsement of Tinubu has intensified conversations about the PDP’s identity and future direction as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.

Political analysts say any alignment with the ruling party could weaken the PDP’s standing among its supporters, many of whom expect it to present a strong alternative to the APC.

For now, the Turaki faction’s stance signals resistance within the party, setting the stage for further internal negotiations in the months ahead.
