2027 Politics: APC Accuses Atiku, Obi of Lacking Democratic Sacrifice

Nigeria’s ruling party has reignited political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State launching a fresh attack on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party leader Peter Obi over their democratic credentials.

In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, the Lagos APC accused both men of having no record of sacrifice during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule, arguing that neither played a visible role in the pro-democracy movement.

The statement, titled “Democracy Without Sacrifice: The Myth of Obi and Atiku,” claimed that genuine democracy is built on consistency, personal risk and loyalty to democratic institutions, rather than what it described as selective outrage driven by political convenience.

According to the party, a review of Nigeria’s democratic history shows that neither Atiku nor Obi was actively involved during periods when activists were detained, forced into exile or subjected to intimidation in the fight to restore civilian rule.

“They made no sacrifices, bore no scars and took no risks in defence of democracy,” the APC said, accusing the two opposition figures of attempting to claim the moral authority earned by those who confronted military repression.

The remarks come as political parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Atiku and Obi both regarded as influential figures in Nigeria’s opposition space following the 2023 presidential race.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Peter Obi had responded publicly to the APC’s claims as of the time of filing this report.
