2027 Rivers Election: Wike Denies Endorsing Any Candidate, Backs Tinubu for Presidency

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that he has endorsed any candidate for the 2027 governorship race in Rivers State, insisting that such decisions rest solely with the state’s elders.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Wike said the responsibility for selecting candidates lies with the Elders Council led by Ferdinand Alabraba, stressing that no individual has the authority to impose leadership on the state.

“I have not endorsed anybody for any position. That responsibility belongs to the elders, and they will meet and decide,” he said.

Firm Support for Tinubu

While distancing himself from local endorsements, Wike reaffirmed his political loyalty to Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“My only commitment for now is to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I have never hidden that,” he stated.

Warning Against Candidate Imposition

Addressing aspirants, Wike cautioned against attempts to impose candidates on Rivers voters, warning that such strategies would fail.

“No governor can impose a candidate on Rivers State. The mistakes of the past will not be repeated,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, describing its actions as crucial to the state’s evolving political dynamics.

Call for Unity Across Party Lines

Wike urged members of the emerging coalition involving both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain united, warning that internal divisions could weaken their influence.

“Our strength today is not because of money, but because we are united and committed,” he said.

The minister further alleged that external forces were attempting to destabilise the coalition due to its growing strength, while also criticising some political appointees who have turned against the group’s leadership, describing such actions as a “failure of character.”

Reaffirming his stance, Wike dismissed reports of any hidden endorsements, stating that the only recognised political backing at present is for the presidency. He commended local government chairmen, elders, and party leaders for fostering cooperation and inclusiveness in Rivers State politics.
