Speculation surrounding the 2027 Rivers State governorship race has been firmly dismissed by Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), who says he has no intention of contesting.
Rumours circulating across social media had suggested Iyaye was preparing a gubernatorial bid with the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The claims quickly gained traction, fuelling political conversations in Rivers State.
In a statement addressing the speculation, Iyaye described the reports as false and misleading, stressing that he has neither declared interest in the 2027 race nor secured endorsement from any political figure.
“I wish to respectfully clarify that these reports are inaccurate and do not reflect the true position,” he said.
He also dismissed suggestions of political alignment or endorsement, making it clear that no such backing exists.
Iyaye reiterated that his attention is firmly on his responsibilities at the NDDC, where he continues to work alongside the commission’s leadership to drive development initiatives across the Niger Delta.
According to him, his current priority is delivering on the commission’s mandate and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth in the region.
While debunking the rumours, Iyaye acknowledged the leadership of Nyesom Wike and his contributions to public service, distancing the minister from the claims.
He also urged the public and media organisations to verify information before sharing, warning against the spread of unconfirmed political narratives.
The denial comes amid increasing speculation over potential contenders in the Rivers governorship race, with political alignments already drawing attention despite the election being years away.
Iyaye’s statement appears aimed at shutting down early conjecture and redirecting focus to governance rather than politics.
