Peter Obi, Aregbesola, David Mark Unveil ADC as 2027 Opposition Front, Promise Competent Leadership to Reclaim Nigeria

Peter Obi has confirmed the official adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the unified political platform for opposition forces ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, marking a bold move to realign the country’s political landscape and present a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi made the announcement on Monday, July 1, 2025, through a personally signed statement on social media, revealing that former Senate President David Mark will serve as National Chairman of the coalition, while ex-Osun governor and former APC chieftain Rauf Aregbesola will serve as National Secretary. Their appointments signal the weight of political experience being thrown into the movement.

The coalition, comprising several political parties, civil society groups, youth blocs, and technocrats, has pledged to deliver a competent, capable, and compassionate government—a clear shot at the Tinubu-led administration which they accuse of economic failure, elite capture, and indifference to the suffering masses.

Obi stated that the decision was reached after “deep reflection on where we are as a country,” adding that rescuing Nigeria from the current crisis requires “bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy.” The former Anambra governor stressed the importance of unity across ideological, ethnic, and regional divides to “dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity.”

The coalition also signaled a shift from personality-driven politics to a values-based platform focused on welfare, competence, and reform. “This isn’t just another party switch. It’s a rescue mission,” a senior source from the coalition said. “We’re not here to recycle the old game but to rewrite the rules for a New Nigeria.”

The emergence of David Mark and Aregbesola as leaders of the ADC-backed coalition is raising eyebrows across the political aisle. While some critics point to their establishment credentials, insiders argue that their crossover signifies a major defection that could fracture the traditional power blocs of both PDP and APC heading into 2027.

Political watchers believe this new coalition could dramatically shift Nigeria’s political equation if it sustains momentum, garners grassroots buy-in, and avoids internal frictions. For now, all eyes are on the ADC as it transforms from a fringe party into a national vehicle for political reinvention.
