Nigerian Journalist Ojo Peter Shot Dead in Ibadan Robbery, Union Demands Justice

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the killing of Ojo Peter, a former reporter with Parrot Extra and Daily Monitor, who was shot during a daylight robbery in Ibadan.

Peter was attacked on 18 August 2025 along the Molete-Oke Ado axis of the city around 2 p.m. Witnesses said armed robbers demanded his cross bag, and despite his pleas that it contained no money, he was shot in the back and left to die.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the media community, raising renewed concerns over the safety of journalists in Oyo State.

In a statement, Ademola Oladapo, Acting Chairman of the NUJ Oyo State Council, described the killing as tragic and unacceptable, calling on security agencies to act swiftly.

“The union is saddened by the news of Ojo Peter’s recent killing in Ibadan by suspected armed robbers. We urge the state police command to fish out the killers of the deceased journalist,” Oladapo said.

The NUJ stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the killing, urging the Oyo State Police Command to unravel the circumstances behind the attack and ensure justice is served.

Colleagues of the late journalist also expressed fears about worsening insecurity in Ibadan, describing Peter’s death as a painful reminder of the dangers citizens face in broad daylight.

Police authorities are yet to release an official statement on the attack, but pressure is mounting on the command to apprehend the culprits and reassure residents of improved safety in the state capital.
