Community demands justice for 16-year-old allegedly killed and dumped in stream

Tension has gripped Ebonyi State following the death of 16-year-old Master Ebuka Chukwu, a Senior Secondary School 2 student of Federal Government College (FGC) Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu confirmed on Sunday that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the killing, even as the Okposi-Okwu community staged a peaceful protest demanding justice.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Who killed Ebuka?”, “Evil people are running FGC Okposi,” and “IGP, stop the killing and bring justice,” the protesters accused the school authorities of negligence and complicity.

Mr Collins Agwu, speaking on behalf of the community, said an autopsy confirmed Ebuka was murdered before his body was thrown into a stream in an apparent cover-up. He accused a staff member, identified as Mr Danjuma, of sending Ebuka and other students to confront hoodlums on July 27, 2025—a mission that allegedly led to his death.

“We want justice to prevail, and those behind Ebuka’s death to be unmasked. The school management is playing politics with this incident,” Agwu said.

Another protester, Chiadikaobi Obasi, condemned what he described as the maltreatment of indigenous students and staff, warning that the community’s patience should not be mistaken for weakness.

The school’s Vice Principal, Mr Ojima O. Emmanuel, expressed shock at the tragedy and pledged cooperation with investigators to uncover the truth.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has assured that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice for the late student and his grieving family.
