The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has defended its decision to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the move as one rooted in political ideology rather than expediency.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mazi Opara Ejimofor, spoke on Monday during an interview with Arise Television, where he clarified the rationale behind Governor Charles Soludo’s recent statement of support for the president.
Ejimofor noted that Soludo’s position stemmed from two key factors: his personal relationship with Tinubu spanning over two decades, and APGA’s long-standing convention of aligning with the ruling party at the federal level.
“Governor Soludo has been friends with President Tinubu for more than 20 years,” Ejimofor explained. “Beyond that, APGA has historically supported the party at the centre, a practice that predates the current administration.”
He added that the endorsement reflects a broader conversation about Nigeria’s political future, insisting that political parties should be guided by ideology rather than serving as “special-purpose vehicles for selfish ambition.”
APGA’s stance is expected to spark debate within opposition circles as the build-up to the 2027 elections intensifies.
