An early morning blaze has destroyed a popular canteen and damaged part of an adjoining building on Akorede Street, opposite The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 1am on Tuesday, was contained by operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service, preventing it from spreading to other nearby properties.

According to Fire Service Chairman, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, the inferno was traced to an electrical appliance that had been left plugged in after the canteen closed for the night.

“It was a shop made of planks used as a canteen and an abandoned building engulfed by fire. Our officers swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to the whole building and other nearby properties,” he said in a statement.

No casualties were recorded, but the canteen and sections of the abandoned structure were destroyed. Officials said properties worth millions of naira were saved during the operation.

Police officers from Sango Division were also on site to provide security cover as firefighters battled the blaze.
