ADC to Tinubu: Nigerians Won’t Endure You Beyond 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a sharp warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting his administration must end in 2027 and rejecting any suggestion that he could remain in office until 2031.

The opposition party accused the Presidency of trying to “normalise tenure elongation” following remarks by former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, who alleged Tinubu was nurturing ambitions of becoming a “life President.”

Responding to the Presidency’s denial, the ADC said the rebuttal only heightened fears that Tinubu intends to stay longer than the constitution allows.

“Given the spate of banditry, killings, hunger, punitive taxes and the worst abuse of power in Nigeria’s history, the President should be preparing to leave in 2027, not plotting to stay longer,”
declared ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi.

The party accused Tinubu of assuming re-election was guaranteed despite worsening insecurity and economic collapse.

“Re-election is not automatic”

The ADC said Tinubu’s posture “betrays a mindset that dismisses re-election as mere formalities,” stressing that Nigerians were unlikely to extend his mandate by “a single day.”

On security, the party described the situation as catastrophic, claiming bandits and terrorists now control vast areas of the North and even impose taxes on citizens.

“Under his watch, national security has degenerated into a cruel joke. Terrorists, bandits and criminals now operate with impunity. Citizens are kidnapped in broad daylight. Rural communities have become warzones,” Abdullahi said.

Economic collapse and hardship

The ADC painted a bleak picture of Nigeria’s economy, accusing the government of destroying livelihoods.

“The naira has collapsed, inflation is out of control, food prices have tripled, jobs are vanishing and businesses are shutting down under punitive taxes,” the party alleged.

The statement also faulted the government’s record on power supply, healthcare, education, and human rights, arguing that Nigerians had become poorer and angrier under Tinubu’s leadership.

“Given this comprehensive failure, it is not only insensitive but dangerous for anyone in the Tinubu presidency to speak glibly of a second term. The President should not be plotting to stay. He should be preparing to leave,” the ADC concluded.
