Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, has been installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking a historic moment for the ancient city.

The traditional rites began at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, where Ladoja was adorned with the symbolic Akoko leaf, before proceeding to the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, where he received his crown.

Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to formally present the new monarch with the staff of office at Mapo Hall, a venue steeped in Ibadan’s political and cultural history.

The stool became vacant following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who passed away on 7 July 2025.

The colourful installation ceremony drew a massive crowd, with residents and dignitaries dressed in resplendent Yoruba attire. Among those in attendance were the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun; and the Chief Imam of Ibadan.

Security was tight throughout the event, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Army personnel ensuring a smooth ceremony.

The Olubadan stool remains one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional institutions, renowned for its unique and orderly succession system, which distinguishes it from other monarchies across the country.
