Terror struck Zamfara State on Friday when armed bandits invaded a mosque in Yandoto community, Tsafe Local Government Area, killing at least five worshippers and abducting several others.
The gunmen reportedly stormed the mosque at about 5:00 a.m. while the faithful were observing dawn prayers. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire on the congregation before whisking away some of the worshippers into the forest.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident in a post on X, warning that bandits have intensified attacks on soft targets in rural communities.
Following the attack, grief-stricken residents gathered to conduct funeral prayers for the victims, describing them as devoted Muslims who were always present at the mosque.
The assault comes amid renewed calls for government and security agencies to step up action against armed groups terrorising communities across Zamfara and other parts of northern Nigeria.
