DPR Donates Gas Cylinders to Ogun School Food Vendors, Promotes Safer Cooking

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Abeokuta Field Office, has distributed 40 units of 12.5kg gas cylinders to food vendors under the Federal Government’s Home Grown School Feeding Programme in Ogun State.

The donation was made during a sensitisation programme themed “LPG Penetration Awareness Campaign for Home Grown School Feeding Programme” in Abeokuta on Friday.

Operations Controller of DPR Abeokuta, Mrs Muinat Bello-Zagi, said the initiative was designed to accelerate the adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the state while reducing dependence on charcoal and firewood.

“Many of the caterers still rely on charcoal and firewood, which harm both health and the environment. We want to change this narrative by promoting LPG as a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable option,” Bello-Zagi explained.

She highlighted the health and environmental benefits of gas cooking, stressing that LPG contains no sulphur, unlike charcoal and firewood, which release harmful emissions.

Beyond the donation, the DPR also trained the vendors on safe cylinder usage, maintenance, and precautions to take in case of leaks or technical issues. Bello-Zagi urged the beneficiaries to always refill their cylinders at DPR-licensed gas plants and avoid roadside vendors to reduce fire risks.

The Chairperson of the food vendors, Mrs Olanike Okeleye, expressed gratitude on behalf of her colleagues, describing the programme as “impactful and highly educative.”

The initiative is part of DPR’s wider campaign to deepen LPG penetration across Nigeria and enhance the safety and wellbeing of communities.
