Global pop icon Taylor Swift has shut down rumours suggesting she was envious of her best friend, Selena Gomez, for getting married before her.
The “Anti-Hero” singer attended Gomez’s private wedding to music producer Benny Blanco in late September, an event that drew massive attention from fans worldwide.
Speculation had spread online that Swift made a joking reference to Gomez “beating her to the altar” during her wedding speech.
However, during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Swift clarified that while she shared a few light-hearted jokes, they had nothing to do with marriage or her own engagement.
“I did do some light teasing about the way we dressed in 2008 — the year we met. It was the year of deep, deep V-necks and colourful skinny jeans,” she said. “I talked about how happy I am for her and how beautiful it’s been to be part of her life. But I didn’t make it about me.”
The Cruel Summer star also revealed that she deliberately avoided mentioning her engagement to NFL player Travis Kelce during her speech, choosing to keep the focus on the bride.
Swift further amused fans by revealing why she hadn’t informed her longtime friend, Ed Sheeran, about her engagement — explaining that the British musician “doesn’t have a phone” and can only be reached via email or FaceTime.
The pop superstar’s clarification comes amid growing fan interest in her relationship with Kelce and her close bond with Gomez, one of the most talked-about celebrity friendships in modern pop culture.
