Veteran Nollywood actress Ireti Doyle has opened up about her decision to stay off social media, describing the online space as increasingly toxic and unsafe for her peace of mind.
The 58-year-old screen legend, who recently resurfaced on Instagram after months of silence, revealed that she withdrew from public interaction to protect her mental and emotional wellbeing.
She wrote:
“I used to wonder what I’d do with myself once I became an ‘empty nester’… now I know. Had to disappear again. The streets of social media (nay, the world in general) are becoming too toxic for my quiet soul. How have you been? I hope you’re protecting yourself?”
Born on May 3, 1967, in Ondo State, Doyle spent part of her early life in Boston, USA, before returning to Nigeria, where she earned a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos.
Her career began as a television presenter and producer, creating and hosting the hit fashion and lifestyle show Oge with Iretiola, which ran for a decade. She also anchored programs such as Morning Ride on Silverbird Television.
Doyle gained fame in the late 1990s and went on to feature in several acclaimed films, including Sitanda (2006), Across the Niger (2009), and Torn (2013). Her performance in these and other roles has earned her numerous accolades, including a Best Supporting Actress award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
The actress was formerly married to broadcaster Patrick Doyle, a marriage that ended in divorce.
Her latest revelation has resonated with many fans who share her concerns about the growing negativity and mental strain associated with social media life.
