Kano Court Jails 33-Year-Old Man for Impersonating Police Officer

A Shari’a Court sitting in the Fagge area of Kano State has sentenced a 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, to eight months imprisonment for impersonating a police officer.

Shitu, who resides at Kofar Waika Quarters in Kano city, was arrested on September 21, 2025, around 5:00 p.m., at Kofar Dawanau while dressed in a police uniform.

According to the prosecution counsel, Zaharaddeen Mustapha, the accused had posed as a police officer before his arrest and was subsequently charged with impersonation.

During the hearing, Shitu pleaded guilty to the charge.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Khadi Nasiru Ahmad Muhammad, convicted him and sentenced him to eight months in prison with an option of a ₦70,000 fine.

The judge said the sentence was to serve as a deterrent to others who might attempt to impersonate law enforcement officers.

Impersonation of security officials has become a recurring issue in several Nigerian states, often leading to criminal exploitation and public mistrust in legitimate officers.
