The Orlu Elders Council has joined the mounting calls for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), urging the Nigerian government to comply with existing court orders that granted his freedom.

In a statement jointly signed by Prof Francis Dike (SAN), Prof Ukachukwu Awuzie, and Prof Protus Uzoma, who serve as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary of the Council respectively, the group expressed full solidarity with the human rights community and activists calling for Kanu’s release.

The council particularly commended the protest movement initiated by activist Omoyele Sowore, describing it as a legitimate democratic action grounded in the principles of justice and rule of law.

“We call upon all Nigerians who share our concerns to join the protest and peacefully demand Kanu’s release,” the elders stated.

They emphasized that the campaign must remain peaceful and non-violent, insisting that only through lawful and democratic means can justice and equity be achieved.

The Orlu Elders Council reaffirmed its alignment with Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other groups peacefully advocating for Kanu’s freedom, noting that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”

Their statement adds to the growing pressure on the federal government to end the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader, who has remained in custody despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
