Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs have arrived at the National Assembly for their much-anticipated screening by the Senate, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request for swift confirmation.
The top military officers, led by General Olufemi Oluyede, the designated Chief of Defence Staff, arrived at the National Assembly complex in Abuja around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, accompanied by senior military aides and officials.
The Senate had earlier shifted the screening to October 29 after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from President Tinubu urging expedited consideration of the nominees.
According to the letter, Tinubu emphasised the importance of confirming the new service chiefs without delay to ensure “continuity, effective coordination, and improved efficiency within the nation’s security architecture.”
Akpabio said the rescheduling was necessary to enable the military chiefs to assume office promptly, describing the move as critical to national security stability.
The screening exercise marks another major step in Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s defence command structure amid growing security challenges across the country.
