Nigerian Music Icon Akiin Shuga Dies at 50 in Canada

Renowned Nigerian musician and bandleader, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.

His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday, revealing that the Shuga Band founder died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.

Described as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” Akiin Shuga was celebrated for his dynamic stage presence and commitment to live music excellence in Nigeria and beyond.

The family, while mourning his passing, appealed for privacy and “quiet reflection” during what they described as a deeply painful period.

Funeral arrangements, they said, will be announced at a later date.

Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
