Kano Politics: 100 APC Members Defect to NNPP, Cite Governor Yusuf’s ‘Visible Achievements’

Defection led by APC woman leader boosts NNPP’s growing influence in Kano

At least 100 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Tarai, Kibiya Local Government Area of Kano State have defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a move seen as a major boost to the ruling party’s influence in the state.

The defectors, led by APC woman leader Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai, were formally received by the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, during a ceremony on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, the defectors cited Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s ongoing development projects and social programmes as their motivation for joining the NNPP.

“The defectors, under the leadership of Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai, said their decision was influenced by the visible achievements of Governor Yusuf’s administration across local and state levels,” Kiru stated.

Commissioner Kibiya commended the new members for what he described as a “bold and wise decision,” assuring them of equal treatment within the NNPP and urging them to contribute actively to the party’s growth.

“You are now part of the NNPP family. Let’s continue to work together for the progress of Kibiya and Kano State,” Kibiya said.

The governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Women Enlightenment, Hajiya Bintoto, also welcomed the defectors, pledging that the NNPP would provide them with opportunities to make meaningful contributions to the state’s development.

The NNPP Chairman of Kibiya Local Government, Sabo Abdullahi, hailed the mass defection as proof of the public’s growing confidence in the Yusuf administration, describing the development as “a sign of good governance and political realignment in Kano.”

The defection underscores the shifting political landscape in Kano, where Governor Yusuf’s NNPP continues to consolidate support amid opposition challenges from the APC.
