
A tragic road accident has claimed the life of an elderly woman after a white Pathfinder Jeep rammed into her along Almaroof, inward Pleasure, Oke-Odo area of Lagos State, over the weekend.
Eyewitnesses said the driver, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle with registration number JJJ 118 HX. The SUV veered off the road and struck the woman, who died instantly from the impact.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived at the scene within minutes and arrested the driver as he attempted to flee. They also cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and restored traffic flow.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, officers from the Ile-Epo Police Division were contacted for reinforcement and have since taken over the investigation. The vehicle has been towed for examination, while the victim’s family was notified using her recovered mobile phone.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the rising cases of fatal crashes caused by drunk and reckless driving in the state.
“The sanctity of human life is inviolable. The continued loss of innocent lives due to recklessness and moral irresponsibility is unacceptable. Every motorist must embrace discipline, sobriety, and respect for human life while using our roads,” Bakare-Oki said.
