Mysterious drones spotted near European airports spark security concerns

Unidentified drones have been observed flying near airports, military bases, and power plants across Europe, raising fears of potential security threats linked to modern “hybrid warfare.”

Security analysts say these drones, though unarmed, may be part of broader operations aimed at testing the resilience of NATO countries supporting Ukraine. The sightings follow patterns of drone use seen in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where attack drones swarm urban areas, creating both physical destruction and widespread panic.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner notes that while in Ukraine drones are used offensively, across Western Europe the current activity appears reconnaissance-oriented. “These drones are buzzing around critical infrastructure at night, suggesting a probe rather than an immediate attack,” he explained.

Officials across several European nations are reportedly investigating the incidents, reviewing surveillance footage and radar logs to identify operators and assess risks. The development has prompted heightened alert levels at key airports and military installations.

Experts warn that while there is no confirmed threat of attacks on European soil, the drone activity highlights the evolving nature of warfare and the vulnerabilities of modern infrastructure. Authorities are urging vigilance and continued monitoring.
