A major crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway triggered hours of crippling traffic on Monday, leaving thousands of commuters stranded as two vehicles caught fire and were completely destroyed.
The chaos began near the New Garage axis, where the collision occurred, creating a massive obstruction on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Emergency responders struggled to clear the charred remains of the vehicles, causing movement to grind to a halt across both lanes.
Motorists travelling out of Lagos were stuck in a long backlog stretching from the Alausa corridor down to the Fatgbems/OPIC roundabout around Mowe. Those heading into the city encountered the same nightmare, with the gridlock stretching from the Long Bridge back to the crash point.
The standstill left many commuters stranded for hours, further compounding frustrations on a route notorious for heavy traffic and frequent accidents.
Authorities were yet to release details of any casualties as of press time.
