Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has opened up about the extreme challenges she faced at the start of her acting career, including being offered a highly controversial script.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the actress disclosed that one of her first scripts required her to sleep with a dog — a role she immediately rejected. She explained that accepting such a part could have negatively defined her career.

“Despite being a newcomer, I was given a script to sleep with a dog. I rejected it because I can’t start off my career like that. Imagine my first ever movie, I am sleeping with a dog. It doesn’t make sense. It is going to be a tag because whatever you start with is what people would associate you with. I didn’t want to be renowned as someone who sleeps with dogs in movies,” she said.

Nkechi noted that after discarding the controversial script, many other aspiring actresses picked it up, though she doubts any of them achieved lasting success in the industry.

Her career breakthrough came shortly after when she met veteran Nollywood filmmaker Emeka Duru, who offered her an opportunity that led to her debut in Through The Fire, directed by Imem Isong.

The actress’s revelations shed light on the often unspoken pressures and unusual challenges faced by newcomers in Nigeria’s film industry.
