Rivers Governor Fubara Orders Recall of 1,000 Teachers Amid Assembly Pressure Over School Conditions

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has directed the immediate recall of 1,000 teachers recruited in 2023, following sustained pressure from the State House of Assembly over the deteriorating state of public schools.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, had expressed concern during a plenary session about the poor conditions in secondary and primary schools across the state. While Governor Fubara initially countered, noting that the decay predated his administration, he reversed course on Tuesday, approving the re-engagement of the teachers.

The recall directive was communicated in a public announcement signed by Sam Ogeh, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). The notice instructed all affected teachers to report to the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) for a revalidation exercise. Teachers are required to present their appointment and posting letters as part of the process.

“In fulfillment of his promise to bridge the manpower gap in public schools across Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the appointment of new teachers across the state,” the statement read.

The move is part of the administration’s efforts to improve staffing and education standards in Rivers State’s public schools, which have faced criticism for inadequate resources and infrastructure.
