Kogi’s Omala LGA Imposes Dusk-to-Dawn Curfew as Security Fears Escalate

Authorities in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State have enforced a strict dusk-to-dawn curfew as rising security threats prompt sweeping movement restrictions and a clampdown on public gatherings.

The curfew, which took effect on 2 December, runs from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily and will remain in force until further notice. Local officials say the measure is part of an intensified effort to protect residents amid growing concern over criminal activity across the council.

LGA Chairman Edibo Peter Mark said 24-hour surveillance has been activated, with security teams deployed to conduct aggressive patrols in vulnerable communities. He directed operatives to tighten checks at all entry points, adding that “all border routes must undergo strict stop-and-search operations with the Joint Task Force fully deployed.”

Beyond movement restrictions, Omala authorities have also suspended major religious and social activities. Mark announced an immediate halt to public events such as Moulud celebrations, Christian vigils, and similar gatherings. Churches and mosques have been instructed to keep worship sessions short, while the use of fireworks for festivals has been banned.

He urged residents to comply with the directives, stressing that community cooperation is critical to restoring calm. “We need everyone’s support to keep the council safe and return our communities to peace,” he said.

The measures come as several parts of Kogi State continue to grapple with banditry, kidnappings, and cross-border criminal operations.
