US and Ukraine to Meet in Miami After Moscow Talks with Putin Stall

US envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Ukraine’s security chief Rustem Umerov in Miami on Thursday, following inconclusive talks in Moscow with Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin described the Moscow discussions, which included Jared Kushner, as yielding “no compromise” on ending the war. Trump called the talks “reasonably good” but warned that a resolution “does take two to tango.”

Key issues remain the future of Ukrainian territories seized by Russia and long-term security guarantees. NATO membership for Ukraine is a major point of contention, opposed by both Moscow and the Trump administration.

Russia has seized about 701 sq km of Ukrainian territory in November, now controlling 19.3% of the country. Putin signalled willingness to continue talks but accused Europe of obstructing peace and warned he was “ready for war.”

Meanwhile, the EU has agreed to end Russian gas imports by 2027 and proposes €90bn in support for Ukraine, amid ongoing concerns over the deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children.
