Tragedy on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway as Family of Three Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash

A man, his wife, and their child lost their lives on Tuesday morning after a multiple-vehicle collision near the Secretariat bus stop, inward Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), two other people sustained severe injuries in the crash, which involved three cars—an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla.

Witnesses say a fully loaded truck, reportedly speeding, rammed into one of the vehicles from behind, causing a chain reaction that sent the car crashing into two others. The truck driver fled the scene with the vehicle and has yet to be identified.

Emergency workers from LASAMBUS rescued the injured, who were trapped inside the wreckage, and transported them to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate. The bodies of the deceased family were handed over to officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for evacuation.

Police officers from the Isheri Olowora Division secured the area, while LASTMA personnel cleared the damaged vehicles to prevent further accidents during peak traffic hours.

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), LASEMA, LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service.

He added that the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “tragic,” extending condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured a swift recovery.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists—especially truck drivers—to resist speeding, saying excessive speed remains a major contributor to fatal crashes. He noted that LASTMA would strengthen surveillance and enforcement to reduce such incidents on Lagos roads.
