A Catholic priest has recounted the harrowing Owo church attack that left over 40 worshippers dead, telling the Federal High Court in Abuja how terrorists armed with explosives and firearms struck St Francis Catholic Church in Ondo State on June 5, 2022.
The priest, whose identity was protected for security reasons, gave his testimony in the ongoing trial of five alleged members of the Al Shabab sect accused of orchestrating the massacre. He described hearing sporadic gunfire and three explosives detonated within the church during the First Pentecost Sunday service, when the congregation had almost finished worship.
“This is a day I will never forget,” the priest said. “Over 40 of our members were killed. Many others were injured or maimed. I had to move children to a safe place while gunshots and explosions continued. The third blast landed close to where I was, and it felt like the ground opened to swallow us.”
He narrated how he attempted to evacuate victims to the hospital, witnessing scenes of chaos, grief, and devastation. “By the second visit to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, the emergency ward was already filled with casualties. With wailing and crying, it was overwhelming,” he said.
During cross-examination, the priest admitted he could not identify or count the attackers amid the confusion. He was later summoned by the Department of State Services in Akure, where he provided a formal statement.
The trial, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, has been adjourned to January 13 and 14, 2026, for further proceedings.
