The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the preeminent sociopolitical youth organization of the Igbo Race Worldwide, has advised Dr. Allen Onyema, CEO of Airpeace, and Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, regarding the unprecedented surge in flight tickets to Eastern Nigeria.
Prof Obiora Okonkwo and Dr. Allen Onyema who serves as its Executive Chairman and Founder, leading the Igbo indigenous Air carrier in Nigeria has conspired to frustrate Igbo travellers in this Christmas season.
Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka, National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, criticized the sudden over 200% surge in air flight costs within a couple of days as Igbo people worldwide made plans to visit home.
Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka has made public statements regarding the alleged sponsorship of terrorism by the administration of Late Mohammadu Buhari, which was purportedly orchestrated by former Attorney General Alhaji Abubarka Malami from 2020 to 2024. These allegations suggest that the Igbo people faced challenges traveling home during this period. However, with the reported cessation of terrorism funding in the Southeast, the Igbo people are now returning home en masse for the 2025 Christmas celebrations to visit relatives, nuclear families, and friends. Nevertheless, Igboayaka has criticized Prof Obiora Okonkwo and Dr. Allen Onyema, owners of United Nigeria Airlines and Airpeace, for allegedly imposing exorbitant airfare hikes on their fellow Igbo people.
The highest patronage to Airpeace and Nigeria United Airlines are the Igbos, instead of Prof Obiora Okonkwo and Dr Allen Onyema to show appreciation to Ndigbo for patronizing their business, they chose to frustrate Igbo travellers during this December period.
The purported law of demand and supply does not rationalize exorbitant profits or escalated flight prices that unduly burden those you claim as your brothers and sisters of Igbo descent.
It’s unfortunate that Dr. Allen Onyema, who previously demonstrated patriotism by providing free flights to Nigerians stranded in South Africa, is now criticized for charging fellow Igbos expensive flight tickets.
Comrade Igboayaka has called on Dr. Allen Onyema and Prof Obiora Okonkwo to demonstrate the high spirit of “Obinwanne” and Onyeaghala Nwanne Ya” by giving prompt directives to their Airlines companies management to reduce the price of flights to all routes leading to Igboland, Enugu, Asaba, Owerri, Uyo, PortHarcourt etc
It is remarkable and astonishing that flights to Owerri, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Uyo, and Enugu between December 8th and 11th were sold at prices between ₦420,000.00 and ₦490,000.00. Moreover, the alleged actions of Dr. Allen Onyema and Prof. Obiora Okonkwo seemingly exacerbated the frustration of Igbo travelers, as flight prices dramatically increased from December 12th, ranging from ₦490,000.00 to ₦520,000.00.
Ndigbo, the likes of Dr Allen Onyema and Prof Obiora Okonkwo are advised to revert to their long-standing tradition of brotherhood, Obinwanne, which has defined them from the outset. Furthermore, they should guarantee that goods and services are offered at reasonable or lower prices, especially during Christmas when a large number of Ndigbo reunite with their families, as suggested by Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka.
