Traffic flow has been restored around the Tincan–Liverpool Bridge in Apapa, Lagos, following the overturning of a diesel tanker that caused widespread gridlock and safety concerns.
The incident occurred early Monday morning, disrupting movement in the busy port corridor and drawing crowds to the scene. Videos shared widely on social media showed residents scooping fuel from the fallen tanker, raising fears of potential fire hazards.
Providing an update, the Lagos State Police Command said officers were swiftly deployed to manage the situation and prevent further danger.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the Area A Commander, the Divisional Police Officer of Apapa, operatives from Area B Command, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and other security agencies were mobilised to the scene.
“The area has been cordoned off, normalcy restored, and efforts are ongoing to trans-load and move the tanker,” she said in a post on her official X account.
Police confirmed that the tanker driver and his assistant, commonly referred to as the motor boy, were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities also assured motorists that traffic control measures were in place to prevent further congestion.
“Traffic is under control. Motorists are advised to comply with all instructions to avoid any obstruction to traffic flow,” SP Adebisi added.
The police warned residents against approaching accident scenes involving fuel tankers, stressing the risk of explosions and loss of lives.
