Makoko Demolitions Spark Outcry as 9,000 Residents Face Displacement and Social Instability

Lagos, 23 January 2026 – The ongoing demolition of homes in Makoko, Lagos State, has left over 9,000 residents displaced, igniting concerns over homelessness, poverty, and potential social instability. The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has criticised the government’s approach, calling the actions abrupt and detrimental to the welfare of vulnerable communities.

Government cites safety, HDAN warns of rights violations

While the Lagos State government has defended the demolitions, arguing that some structures were built under high-tension power lines and posed serious safety hazards, HDAN Executive Director Festus Adebayo stressed that safety concerns should not compromise residents’ rights, dignity, and long-term security.

“Protecting citizens and enforcing planning regulations is crucial, but demolishing homes without providing alternative settlements exposes residents to severe hardship,” Adebayo said, noting the urgent need for humane, structured relocation plans.

Makoko: A community on stilts

Makoko, home to an estimated 80,000 to 250,000 people, is built on stilted wooden homes above the Lagos Lagoon. Residents face chronic challenges, including poor sanitation, limited access to schools, clean water, electricity, and waste management systems. Many rely on artisanal fishing and informal trade for survival.

The Lagos State government has long cited environmental and security risks, including flooding and fire hazards, in its plans to regenerate Makoko. However, critics argue that forced evictions without structured rehabilitation threaten to deepen poverty and social unrest.

HDAN has called on the government to implement a consultative, human-centred approach to urban regeneration, ensuring that displaced residents are offered adequate housing solutions and access to essential services.
