Emergency responders in Lagos handled 1,156 incidents in 2025, with 173 fatalities recorded across the state, according to new data released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Despite the deaths, the agency noted a decline in total emergencies compared to 2024 figures.

A breakdown of the statistics shows that road crashes were the most frequent emergencies, accounting for 394 cases. This was followed by tanker and truck accidents with 249 incidents, while fire outbreaks made up 204 cases.

Months and areas with highest emergencies

February recorded the highest number of incidents with 122 cases, closely followed by April with 121, and May with 119.

By location, Alimosho Local Government Area topped the list with 180 emergencies, while Eti-Osa recorded 144, and Ikeja had 139 incidents.

Nearly 2,000 victims rescued

Data from LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit revealed that between January 1 and December 30, 2025, 1,924 victims were rescued and resuscitated during emergency operations.

The agency stated that the rescued victims comprised 906 adult males, 1,003 adult females, 13 boys, and two girls.

However, 173 people were confirmed dead within the same period. Among the deceased were 139 adult males, 32 adult females, and two boys.

Agency pledges stronger preparedness for 2026

Speaking during a staff retreat, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency is fully equipped to improve its emergency response capacity in 2026.

He credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the agency with resources aimed at strengthening disaster mitigation.

“Our chosen theme, ‘Building a Resilient and Efficient LASEMA: Strengthening Preparedness, Response and Recovery in Lagos State,’ reflects the quiet but critical role our personnel play daily,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu emphasised that LASEMA’s strength lies not only in infrastructure and technology but in the professionalism and discipline of its workforce.

He also called on residents to prioritise safety and avoid actions that could trigger emergencies, noting that prevention remains key to effective disaster management.

“While government continues to strengthen response capacity, public cooperation is essential to reducing emergencies and protecting lives,” he added.
