Cross River Horror: 23-Year-Old Allegedly Kills Father with Machete After Church

Police rescue suspect from mob as investigation continues

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, after a 23-year-old man allegedly slashed his father’s throat with a machete, killing him instantly.

The attack reportedly occurred near O3 Palace, Usaja, in Ikpakapit Ward, shortly after the victim returned from church.

The suspect, identified as Bassey Ubi, allegedly inflicted a deep neck wound on his father inside their home. Residents rushed to the scene and reportedly attempted to lynch the suspect, but police intervened just in time.

ASP Sunday Eitokpah, Police Public Relations Officer for the Cross River State Police Command, said the suspect was believed to be under the influence of illicit substances at the time of the attack.

“The unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of today. The suspect is Bassey Ubi, 23 years old, and he is an alleged drug addict. From the information available to us, it is likely the influence of drugs that made him act in that manner,” Eitokpah said.
“It was a deep machete cut on the neck inflicted by the son on his father.”

The suspect sustained injuries from the mob before police rescued him. He was taken for medical attention and is now detained at a police facility for further investigation. Meanwhile, the victim’s body was removed to the morgue by family members before police arrived.

Police Warn Against Jungle Justice

The Cross River State Police Command, under Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua, condemned the attempted mob action and urged the public to report criminal activities rather than taking the law into their own hands.

“Jungle justice remains a criminal offence, and anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Eitokpah said.

The investigation into the tragic killing is ongoing.
