Sokoto Village Deserted After Repeated Attacks by Bello Turji’s Bandits

Magarau village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, has been completely abandoned following a series of violent raids by armed bandits linked to the notorious gang leader Bello Turji.

Journalist Bakatsine, who monitors conflict and insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest, disclosed the latest exodus on social media, highlighting the devastating human toll. According to his post, the persistent attacks forced residents to flee, leaving behind burnt structures, shattered homes, and a haunting silence.

“Magarau village has been completely abandoned following repeated attacks by armed bandits loyal to Bello Turji. The sustained violence has forced the entire community to flee, leaving behind only ruins, silence, and a lingering atmosphere of fear,” Bakatsine wrote.

The ongoing wave of banditry underscores the deepening security crisis in Nigeria’s northwest, raising urgent questions about government interventions, community protection, and the recurring cycle of displacement and impunity.

The residents’ exodus marks yet another grim chapter in the region’s struggle against organized bandit gangs, as authorities grapple with safeguarding rural communities and restoring stability.
