Iran Launches Strategic Naval Drills in Strait of Hormuz as U.S. Military Presence Surges Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran/Geneva – February 17, 2026 – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has commenced intensive naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, the vital chokepoint for global energy supplies, signalling rising tensions with the United States as diplomatic efforts and military posturing intensify.

The drills, dubbed Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz, are being overseen by IRGC Commander‑in‑Chief Major General Mohammad Pakpour and involve live‑fire exercises, readiness tests and simulated responses to possible maritime threats in the region.

Iranian state media say the exercises aim to assess operational preparedness and demonstrate Tehran’s ability to harness its geographic strengths in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.

Strategic Waterway Under Scrutiny

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages, carrying an estimated one‑fifth of global crude oil exports. Tehran’s military activities come as U.S. forces continue to reinforce their regional posture, deploying additional warships, fighter jets and support aircraft to deter escalation and maintain freedom of navigation.

Recent satellite imagery confirms an increased U.S. naval presence, anchored around the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and several escort destroyers operating near Iranian waters.

Tensions Amid Ongoing Diplomacy

The heightened military activity occurs against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic talks in Geneva, Switzerland, between U.S. and Iranian negotiators focused on nuclear issues and broader regional security concerns.

Iran has signalled willingness to engage in negotiations but continues to push for relief from sanctions, while Washington insists on addressing nuclear, missile and regional influence concerns as part of any agreement.

U.S. President Donald Trump has maintained pressure on Tehran to reach a deal, while also reinforcing military deterrence through the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford supercarrier to the Middle East.

Analysts say Iran’s drills — occurring as diplomats meet and global markets remain sensitive to regional instability — reflect Tehran’s strategy to showcase military readiness, deter aggression and influence negotiations from a position of strength.
