Edo Tragedy: 28-Year-Old Okada Rider Beaten to Death While Negotiating New Motorcycle in Benin

Police arrest suspect after fatal dispute during bike purchase in Uhunmwonde LGA

A 28-year-old commercial motorcycle rider has been killed in what authorities describe as a violent dispute during negotiations to purchase a new motorcycle in Edo State.

The victim, identified as Ayoade Ohiremen, was reportedly attacked in Ahor community along the Oluku Road bypass in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Benin City.

Dispute turns deadly

According to local sources, Ohiremen had joined other commercial motorcyclists in a bid to secure a motorcycle under a balance-and-carry arrangement.

Trouble allegedly began when some of his colleagues questioned his presence at the transaction point, accusing him of not being authorised to participate in the purchase.

An argument followed, escalating into violence. The victim was allegedly beaten and later died at the scene.

Sources further claimed that those involved dragged his body into a nearby farm before fleeing.

Security response and arrest

The Deputy Corps Commander (Operations) of the Edo State Security Corps, Richard Balogun, confirmed the incident and said operatives swiftly responded after receiving the report.

He disclosed that one suspect, identified as Bello Bawa, has been arrested in connection with the killing.

According to Balogun, the suspect was handed over to officers at the Ahor Police Division and subsequently transferred to the homicide department of the Edo State Police Command for further investigation.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals linked to the attack.

The killing has sparked concern among commercial motorcyclists in the area, raising fresh questions about dispute resolution and safety within informal transport networks in Benin City.
