Ndigbo Worldwide Union backs US lawmakers calling for constitutional reform
The Igbo pressure group Ndigbo Worldwide Union has voiced strong support for United States lawmakers urging Nigeria to remove Sharia and blasphemy provisions from its Constitution. The group argued that no modern state can function effectively under two parallel legal systems.
Addressing the issue, Ndigbo Worldwide Union emphasized that maintaining dual legal codes — secular and religious — undermines governance, equality, and the rule of law. The group echoed concerns raised by international observers and lawmakers about the challenges of balancing Sharia law with Nigeria’s federal legal framework.
“The coexistence of Sharia law alongside secular law creates conflicts that hinder national unity and legal clarity. It is time for Nigeria to adopt a single, inclusive legal system that protects the rights of all citizens,” the group stated.
The union’s position adds to ongoing debates over the place of religious legal provisions in Nigeria’s Constitution, highlighting tensions between federal authority, regional autonomy, and human rights concerns.
