Lakurawa militants strike multiple villages; security forces launch manhunt
At least 34 people were killed on Wednesday when suspected Lakurawa terrorists carried out coordinated attacks on several rural communities in Kebbi State, targeting residents observing Ramadan.
The attacks hit villages in the Arewa Local Government Area, including Bui, Mamunu, Awashaka, Masama, and surrounding settlements. Survivors described the assaults as highly organised and indiscriminate, with gunmen storming homes and firing on civilians.
According to security sources:
The violence forced many residents to flee for safety, while local security forces have since been deployed to protect affected communities, assist survivors, and prevent the militants from escaping. Tracking operations are ongoing.
SP Bashir Usman, Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident. Meanwhile, the state government, through Special Adviser Alhaji Abdullahi Idris Zuru, condemned the attacks as unprovoked and heartless, noting that victims were fasting Muslims.
“The Kebbi State Government, in collaboration with the Nigerian military, is closing in on these terrorists, who are mostly spillovers from Niger Republic and Sokoto, with no permanent base in Kebbi,” Zuru said.
The government assured that survivors would receive immediate assistance, while authorities vowed to tackle the security challenges in the region until stability is restored.
