Abuja witnessed a solemn reception on Monday as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, received the body of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The late senator’s wife, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children were also welcomed at the airport amid tributes from political figures and dignitaries.
Joining Minister Wike were prominent politicians including Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees; Senators Philip Aduda, Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu; House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda; Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Ambassador Desmond Akawor; and APC National Vice Chairman (South South), Victor Giadom.
Senator Mpigi passed away in London on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 64. Wike had traveled to London last Thursday to condole with the family and oversee arrangements for the repatriation of his remains.
The reception underscores the high esteem in which Senator Mpigi was held and marks the beginning of arrangements for his final burial in Nigeria.
