Playground turns deadly as flood control channel claims young lives in Ikpoba-Okha LGA
Two children have died after slipping into a floodwater collection site on Erediauwa Street, off Sapele Road, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on Sunday while four children were playing near the muddy channel.
Eyewitnesses reported that the children accidentally fell into the pool of water designed to collect excess flood runoff. Two were retrieved lifeless, while the other two were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff successfully revived them.
The witness described the site as inherently dangerous due to its muddy, slippery conditions. “No one expected children to be around that spot. It is meant for flood control, and the mud made it very dangerous,” the source said.
Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that emergency teams were immediately deployed after the report. She stated that two children had already died before rescue personnel arrived, highlighting the rapid escalation of the tragedy.
Authorities are urging parents and caregivers to ensure children stay clear of flood control sites and other hazardous areas, especially during the rainy season.
The incident raises renewed concerns about public safety and the need for adequate barriers around floodwater collection sites in urban areas.
