Alex Mascot’s Defection to Labour Party Signals Major Resurgence, Says Kaduna LP Chairman

The recent defection of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, House of Representatives member for Aba North/South Federal Constituency, to the Labour Party (LP) has been hailed as a significant boost for the party, Kaduna State Chairman Eld. Dr. Yusuf Solomon Danbaki has said.

Danbaki described the move, following Mascot’s resignation from APGA, as a turning point for the LP, coming after years of internal crises and electoral setbacks.

Strategic Alignment with LP’s People-Centered Agenda

According to Danbaki, Mascot’s defection followed a strategic meeting with Governor Alex Otti and demonstrates his alignment with LP’s commitment to welfare-oriented governance. The state chairman emphasized that the move reflects renewed confidence in the leadership of Senator Dr. Esther Nenadi Usman, whose efforts have stabilized the party after years of factional disputes.

LP’s Resurgence After 2023 Setbacks

The Labour Party achieved notable gains in the 2023 general elections, securing eight Senate seats and 35 House of Representatives seats, largely fueled by the “Obidient” movement. However, internal leadership crises under former National Chairman Julius Abure led to mass defections, court-ordered reruns, and the unfortunate passing of some members. By mid-2025, the party had lost all eight Senators and several House members.

Danbaki noted, “The tide began to turn with the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Sen. Nenadi Usman as National Chairman, restoring stability and credibility. Together with Governor Otti’s governance model in Abia State—marked by welfare programs, free education for indigent children, and support for senior citizens—the party has stemmed further losses and attracted new members.”

Open Invitation to Former Members

The Kaduna LP chairman extended a warm invitation to former members to return, asserting that the party is now ready for a new era of unity, merit-based politics, and people-focused progress.

“This defection is more than a political shift; it’s a testament to LP’s enduring appeal. With Usman at the helm and Otti’s successes as inspiration, the party is poised for a comeback,” he said.
