Senator Gershom Bassey Quits PDP, Cites Persistent Crises and Internal Divisions

Former Cross River South Senator, Gershom Bassey, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming persistent internal crises, unresolved conflicts, and deep divisions within the party for his departure.

Bassey, who also once contested for the governorship of Cross River State, described his decision as one made “with a heavy heart,” expressing disappointment over the party’s recent trajectory and its inability to uphold the unity and values that once defined it.

Resignation Letter Highlights Party Disunity

In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to PDP leadership in Ward 9, Calabar South Local Government Area, Bassey lamented the ongoing split within party structures, which he said had eroded the party’s ideals and undermined its democratic foundations.

“The most recent crisis has unfortunately made it clear that the party is drifting further away from the ideals that once bound us together,” Bassey wrote.

He also criticised party elders and leaders for failing to take meaningful steps to restore discipline, vision, and unity. “What makes this even more painful is the apparent unwillingness of party elders and leaders to genuinely fight for its soul and restore the discipline, unity and vision that once defined it,” he added.

Departure Signals Political Uncertainty Ahead of 2027 Governorship Race

Bassey noted that the developments had turned the PDP, once a respected political institution, into a shadow of its former self. He said he preferred to step aside rather than remain part of a system that no longer reflected his principles, despite years of investment and commitment to building the party.

The former senator did not reveal his next political move, leaving speculation about his 2027 governorship ambitions in Cross River State open.

Political analysts suggest Bassey’s exit could influence party dynamics in the state as candidates gear up for the next election cycle.
