The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a socialite known as “Elena”, who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a local clinic. The incident has sparked concern across social media, prompting authorities to emphasize strict adherence to healthcare standards.
The Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) confirmed on Thursday that a thorough and transparent investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
According to Abiola Idowu, Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, preliminary reports indicate that the clinic involved is registered with the agency. However, she stressed that registration does not exempt facilities from regulatory review, especially when patient safety is at risk.
“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing, and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures all facilities comply with operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols,” Idowu said.
Idowu highlighted that aesthetic surgeries are governed by strict regulatory standards covering facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention, patient consent, anaesthetic safety, and emergency response readiness.
The agency has begun reviewing the clinic’s compliance with these standards, verifying the credentials of medical personnel involved, and assessing the level of care provided before, during, and after the procedure.
“The government remains committed to protecting the health and safety of all residents through strengthened regulatory oversight and strict enforcement of healthcare standards,” Idowu added.
Authorities have also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could undermine the investigation’s integrity.
