Governorship aspirant Iyabo Obasanjo has expressed strong confidence in securing the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the 2027 Nigeria elections, highlighting her popularity and grassroots engagement as key advantages.
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Obasanjo said that the party’s potential adoption of a consensus candidate could further enhance her chances, given her early declaration of interest and visible support across communities.
“I see it as beneficial to me. Several others have not officially declared, even though their actions suggest interest, and no fresh aspirant has stepped forward this late compared to when I made my intention known,” she said.
Obasanjo stressed that many prospective candidates have not actively connected with grassroots communities, unlike her ongoing engagement with local residents. She argued that her support stems from performance in office, not financial influence.
“For me, it’s clearly an advantage, and I’m very confident about the support I enjoy on the ground. It’s not built on money politics but on my performance as commissioner for health and later as a senator,” she explained.
She added that her tenure as senator remains highly regarded among constituents, citing direct feedback from ordinary citizens in markets and communities.
On the topic of party consensus, Obasanjo argued that the process reflects members’ and electorate’s preferences, favouring aspirants with proven popularity.
“Consensus will ultimately favour those who can win elections, because the party’s goal is victory. They won’t impose an unpopular choice that could create tension among aspirants or discourage strong contenders. That’s why I’m convinced consensus is the right path,” she said.
Her statements signal a strategic positioning as APC stakeholders consider methods to streamline candidate selection ahead of Ogun State’s gubernatorial contest.
