Ogun Nurse Remanded Over Alleged Abortion, Murder of NYSC Corper

A Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, has remanded 37-year-old nurse Kehinde Adesanya over her alleged involvement in the abortion and death of 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Victoria Ariyo.

Ariyo, who served under Abeokuta South Local Government, reportedly died from complications following an attempted termination of pregnancy. Sources indicate that the NYSC corper was romantically involved with the Local Government Inspector, Abass Olalekan, which allegedly led to the pregnancy.

Olalekan was previously arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted abortion, pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail of N500,000.

Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday on a four-count charge that includes conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder. The charges allege that between January and March 2026, she supplied drugs to Ariyo in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy, which reportedly resulted in her death.

The charges read:

  • Count I: Conspiracy to commit abortion (Section 516, Criminal Code, Ogun State, 2006).
  • Count II: Attempted abortion through supplying drugs (Section 230).
  • Count III: Conspiracy to commit murder (Section 324).
  • Count IV: Unlawful killing of Victoria Ariyo (Section 319).

Police counsel Solomon Babalola requested the court to remand Adesanya for 60 days at Ibara Correctional Centre, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). Magistrate Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye approved the motion and adjourned the case until May 26 for mention.

The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of medical professionals and the legal consequences of unlawful abortion practices in Nigeria.
