Rabies Outbreak in Enugu LGA Triggers Urgent Health Warning as Government Issues Safety Measures

Authorities in Enugu State have raised alarm over a confirmed outbreak of rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, warning residents of the deadly risk posed by the viral disease.

The state government, through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, issued a public advisory urging immediate caution as efforts intensify to contain the spread.

Rabies, a viral infection that affects both humans and animals, is commonly transmitted through bites or exposure to saliva from infected animals—particularly dogs. Health officials warn that once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal.

Government Rolls Out Emergency Measures

To curb further transmission, the government has directed dog owners and pet handlers to urgently vaccinate their animals. Residents have also been instructed to keep pets confined and prevent them from roaming freely in public spaces.

The advisory further cautions against contact with stray or unfamiliar animals within the affected area, stressing that vigilance is critical in breaking the chain of transmission.

What To Do If Exposed

Authorities have outlined immediate steps for anyone bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid animal.

“Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap under running water for at least 10 minutes and seek urgent medical care at the nearest health facility,” the statement said.

Residents are also encouraged to report animals displaying unusual aggression, excessive salivation, paralysis, or abnormal behaviour to veterinary authorities.

Containment Efforts Underway

The state’s Veterinary Services Department is working closely with relevant agencies and community stakeholders to manage the outbreak and prevent further spread.

Officials say public awareness will play a key role in reducing fatalities, urging community leaders to sensitise residents on the dangers of rabies and the importance of early response.

The development has heightened concerns across the state, as authorities race to contain the outbreak and protect both human and animal populations from one of the world’s most lethal viral infections.
