Plateau Killings: Tinubu Meets Mutfwang, Cancels Ogun Trip to Visit Jos Amid Rising Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held an emergency meeting with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as concerns mount over the recent wave of deadly attacks in the North-Central state.

The high-level meeting comes days after the Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which left at least 28 people dead and heightened tensions across Plateau State.

Emergency Talks Over Security Crisis

Governor Mutfwang arrived at the State House on Wednesday evening following a directive from the President, who had summoned him for urgent consultations on the deteriorating security situation.

President Tinubu had earlier condemned the killings in Plateau and a separate attack in Kahir village, Kaduna State, describing the perpetrators as “heartless cowards” who targeted defenceless citizens under the cover of darkness.

“Anyone who will sneak under the cover of the night and kill defenceless citizens… is a heartless coward,” the President said through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

While denouncing the violence, Tinubu also commended Governor Mutfwang for his response efforts and instructed security agencies to intensify operations to track down those responsible.

Tinubu Heads to Jos

In a significant shift, the President has postponed his planned visit to Ogun State and will instead travel to Jos on Thursday to commiserate with victims and assess the situation firsthand.

The visit underscores growing federal concern over the recurring attacks and signals a renewed push to restore stability in Plateau State.

According to the presidency, the trip will focus on supporting affected communities and strengthening security measures to prevent further violence.

Warning Against Divisive Narratives

Amid rising tensions, Tinubu cautioned against framing the attacks along religious lines, warning that such narratives could further inflame divisions and escalate violence.

The latest developments highlight the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, particularly in volatile regions like Plateau, where communities continue to grapple with recurring attacks.
